Separate a need from an upgrade

If your fridge failed or your work laptop is unreliable, waiting has a cost. Set a deadline. If the purchase is only an upgrade, set a target price and take your time.

Judge today’s price against today’s market

Compare the exact model at a few trusted stores. If every store is near the same price, it may be the new normal—not a limited sale. For older products, compare the replacement model too.

Look for a reason the price could move

Waiting makes more sense when a new model or clearance is actually near. Write down a target total and a date to check again. Otherwise, “wait for a sale” can last forever.

Account for inventory and configuration risk

If several products would work, waiting is easier. If you need one exact size, color, or model and today's price is fair, holding out may leave you with a worse choice.

Use a good-enough rule

Choose three things before shopping: the latest date you can wait, your maximum delivered price, and the minimum return or warranty protection you need.

Wait when the purchase is optional, the price is average, or an important detail is missing. You do not need the lowest price ever—just a fair one.
